Logan Whaley – Funky Tonight

Logan Whaley brings the funk with the infectious dancefloor stomp of “Funky Tonight”. Volume is a given for this is a sound that revels in its own physicality. A careening energy races forward for the band’s interplay stuns. Everybody here listens to each other resulting in a communal quality of the work becoming joyous. The layered approach makes sure that the piece never lets up, always doubling-down on its chaotic vision. Done with the utmost of dignity, they bring together old school and contemporary elements to create a vibrant work that feels absolutely crackling with energy.

The references abound and feel heavily indebted to Logan Whaley’s NYC roots. For the classic side of things, he brings to mind the gracious grooves of ESG. Sheer-energy wise they bring the party with a bit of Liquid Liquid’s locked-in rhythms. For the newer side of that NYC sound, they draw from LCD Soundsystem’s absolutely anthemic approach with a piece that seemingly goes on into the infinite. Going further on, that same James Murphy label DFA Records appears to be an important touchstone within the overall execution. Logan Whaley makes this particular style completely his own with a giddiness that feels so inviting.

Nor do they waste a moment for they burst right out of the gate. A buildup does occur, but they really make sure that from that first initial impulse they grab your attention. From there the vocals swim on through the joyous din. Keyboards have a lot of passion to them for they add to the overall tight grooves of the work. Best of all is that rhythm section with its angular emphasis helping to make sure that the rest of the song follows accordingly. The playful sensibility never slows instead it seems to double then triple down on the excitement. Some surprises even rest right in the center of the track, from the blast of fanfare to the way that the piece gradually loses control, becoming more unhinged with each passing moment.

“Funky Tonight” holds nothing back on the intense rush of energy that Logan Whaley conjures up with ease.
